an Italian in Paris

Painting Pietà Woman supporting a wounded man
I had been thinking for a long time of painting grief, and thought of some Pietà, as they were painted in the Italian Renaissance; then during the Kosovo war I was seeing all the pictures of crying helpless women, and wanted to paint the survivors'strength. Every time there is a war, this scene becomes dramatically alive. Pietà, 1999, oil on canvas, cm 70x140

Painting Beached Mermaids Seascape with drawing of m ermaids
(from the press release of the exhibition The world of Mermaids, Arteincornice, Turin 2000) The artist has chosen a theme, Sea and Mermaids, allowing her to tell a lot of different stories, to use different techniques, rhythms and styles. Carla DellaBeffa takes us into the depth of the seas, moving from oil paintings to a veil sculpture, from sequences of images and words to an amusing floor installation. She creates a world swimming with ideas and Sirens. A magical, colorful journey into the secrets of the ocean. With plenty of humour.

Everybody follows her/his road in life, crossing many people. One should be able to recognize the good ones: sometimes an encounter can change a life, but most are unimportant. These are -real size- the steps of some of the people I met. I'd like them to come and greet and accompany you in an airport or in the hall of a hotel. I like to think some of them could become part of your life, saying good morning when you wake up, welcoming you as you come back home at night.
